Protect Yourself: Scams Targeting Job Seekers in Nova Scotia

Updated: Aug 9, 2023

In today's digital age, scammers are increasingly targeting job seekers in Nova Scotia. These deceptive individuals exploit the eagerness to find employment by offering enticing job opportunities that often turn out to be fraudulent. It is crucial for job seekers to be aware of these scams and take proactive steps to protect themselves.

  1. Recognize the Warning Signs: Job scams come in various forms, but they often share common warning signs.

    1. Be cautious if a job posting promises unrealistically high earnings, requires upfront payments for background checks, training, or equipment, or they want to send you funds to purchase equipment.

    2. Is the individual using messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Telegram?

    3. Are you being asked for sensitive information, such as bank account details or your SIN, before a formal hiring process is established?

    4. Does the individual create a sense of urgency around accepting the job offer? High pressure tactics are common to most scams, including job offer scams.

    5. Research the company and verify the job posting details to ensure legitimacy. Contact the company's human resources department. Search for similar postings in other provinces.

    6. Search the Better Business Bureau's scam tracker database.

    7. If something feels off or too good to be true, trust your instincts, and proceed with caution.

  2. Guard Your Personal Information: Protecting your personal information is crucial when interacting with potential employers. Scammers may request sensitive data like Social Insurance Numbers or banking information under the guise of verifying your identity or setting up direct deposit. Legitimate employers will never ask for such information upfront. Be wary of sharing personal details until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the employer. Safeguarding your information will help prevent identity theft and financial loss.

  3. Report and Seek Assistance: If you encounter a job scam in Nova Scotia, take immediate action. Report the scam to your local authorities, the Better Business Bureau and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (1-888-495-8501). By reporting the incident, you not only protect yourself but also help prevent others from falling victim to the same scam. Additionally, reach out to reputable resources such as Nova Scotia Works, your local employment centre, for guidance and support in your job search.

It's crucial to remain vigilant and informed about scams targeting job seekers. By recognizing the warning signs, safeguarding our personal information, and reporting incidents, we can protect ourselves and others from falling victim to fraudulent job opportunities. Remember, your diligence and awareness are the key to a safer job search experience. Stay informed, stay safe!
